Stay off a new asphalt driveway for 24 hours, then drive on it after 48 to 72 hours, longer in a heat wave. For the first few weeks avoid heavy trucks, turning your wheels while parked and anything with a kickstand. Asphalt keeps hardening for 60 to 90 days in warm weather.
The paving crew leaves, the driveway looks finished, and it is tempting to pull the car right in. Don't. Hot-mix asphalt goes down at well over 250 degrees and needs time to cool and harden all the way through, not just on top.

Heat stretches every number on that chart. A driveway paved during a 95-degree week stays soft longer, and the smart move is to add a day before the first car goes on it.
What damages new asphalt
- Turning the steering wheel while the car is not moving, which twists the surface into scuffs
- Parking in the exact same spot every day for the first month
- Kickstands, jack stands, trailer tongues and ladder feet, which punch holes. Put a piece of plywood under them
- Heavy trucks near the edges, which are the weakest part of new pavement
- Gas, oil and antifreeze drips, which soften fresh asphalt
None of this is fragile-driveway paranoia. It is simply that asphalt is a flexible pavement, and it is at its most flexible in its first summer.
Can it rain on a new asphalt driveway?
Rain after the asphalt has been rolled and cooled does no harm. Crews do not pave in active rain because water keeps the mix from compacting, so a scheduled day may move if a storm rolls in.
Why does my new driveway have tire marks?
New asphalt is soft enough in its first summer for power steering to scuff it when wheels turn while the car is stopped. The marks usually fade as the surface hardens and oxidizes. Turning while rolling prevents them.
