Poor drainage is the number one cause of premature driveway failure in South Jersey. With approximately 45 inches of annual rainfall, frequent nor'easters, and seasonal thunderstorms that can dump inches of rain in hours, your driveway must be engineered to move water off and away from the surface efficiently. Standing water on or alongside your driveway causes base erosion, freeze-thaw damage, foundation moisture problems, and accelerated surface deterioration. Harrison Paving has been solving drainage challenges for South Jersey homeowners since 1985.
Every Harrison Paving driveway is graded to direct water away from your garage and home foundation. We design a minimum cross-slope that moves water to one or both sides of the driveway, combined with a longitudinal grade that directs flow toward the street, storm drain, or approved drainage area. On flat properties common in parts of Gloucester County and Camden County, achieving adequate slope requires careful calculation and execution during base preparation. Even a quarter inch per foot makes the difference between a surface that sheds water instantly and one that develops puddles.
Puddles or standing water on the surface indicate low spots that trap water rather than shedding it. This is typically a grading issue that can be resolved during resurfacing or replacement by correcting the subgrade profile. Water pooling at garage aprons is often caused when the driveway grade slopes toward the garage rather than away from it — a serious condition that can lead to garage flooding and foundation damage. Water running off the driveway and eroding landscaping or pooling against the foundation suggests the driveway grade needs redirection or that perimeter drainage collection is needed.
A French drain is a gravel-filled trench containing a perforated pipe that collects subsurface water and redirects it to a safe discharge point. French drains are commonly installed along the driveway edge on properties where adjacent landscaping or soil conditions cause water to migrate toward the driveway base. They are particularly effective on clay-heavy soils in Gloucester County where groundwater saturation is common during wet seasons.
Channel drains (also called trench drains) are surface-mounted drainage systems installed across or along the driveway surface to intercept sheet flow before it reaches problem areas. They are commonly used at the bottom of sloped driveways to prevent water from running into garages, at the base of steep properties where runoff collects, and across driveways where municipal sidewalks create a dam that traps water.
Your home's gutter system can contribute to driveway drainage problems if downspouts discharge onto or adjacent to the driveway surface. We recommend extending downspouts at least 4 to 6 feet away from the driveway edge using underground piping or above-ground extensions. During your free estimate, we evaluate downspout locations and recommend adjustments if they are contributing to drainage issues.
